A.G.A Bioengineering Systems is responsible for
providing bioengineering materials for ‘in-house’ projects
and for supply to the wider industry.
Whilst bioengineering is based upon providing green solutions
to modern problems, sometimes it is necessary and indeed advantageous
to combine ‘soft’ techniques with more accepted ‘hard’
materials. To ensure that all your requirements can be met the A.G.A.
Group stock a host of associated products to ensure ‘a one stop
shop’ to get your project underway. This is backed up by our experienced
design team, and please remember we are happy to quote to carry out the
installation of any of our products and your projects.
Our product range currently includes:-
Coir edge sods, coir rolls, coir pallets, eco-islands, faggots,
gabions, geo-textiles, AGA span, AGA rock-rolls.
Coir Edge Sods
 |
Coir Edge Sods form the
‘soft’ element of vegetated gabions they can also of course
be used to provide vegetation in many other applications, they can
be used to provide a green edge to ‘AGA Span’ revetment
or to provide a cost effective way of establishing aquatic vegetation.
Edge
sods provide a healthy stand of vigorous aquatic vegetation to the
front of gabions, this can create an attractive ‘soft’
engineering finish to an otherwise ‘hard’ engineering
structure.
|
This composite system from AGA, ensures
the structural advantage of gabions with the benefits of immediate
aquatic vegetation and provides almost instantaneous ecological
regeneration and enhancement.
Edge sods will have been planted at the nursery
using 110cc ‘root trainers’. The plants will be provided
at a rate of 6 per l/m and will be firmly rooted into the coir material.
Edge sods are available from stock in a variety of planting variations,
our ‘standard mixed’ planted edge sod is extremely popular
and highly recommended.
Edge sods can also be grown to order.

Coir Rolls
Coir Rolls provide an excellent alternative to hard revetment
to establish a ‘soft’ and effective method of erosion control
or to establish immediate habitat. Coir rolls are available as either
unplanted or as a pre-planted and established product.
Specification of coir rolls.
 |
300mm (12”) dia x 3m long. 9kg. Per l/m dry weight. |
 |
400mm (16”) dia x 3m long. 17 kg. Per l/m dry weight. |
 |
Compression 110 –120 kg/m2. |
 |
Nets made from synthetic multi-strand fibre, 50mm diamond
mesh. |

|
Pre-planted and established coir rolls.
Coir rolls will have been planted at the nursery using
110cc ‘root trainers’. The plants will be provided at
a rate of 6 per l/m and will be firmly rooted into the coir material.
Coir Rolls are available from stock in a variety of planting
variations, our ‘standard mixed’ Coir Roll is extremely
popular and highly recommended. Coir rolls can also be grown to
order.
|
For applications in deeper or fast flowing
water coir rolls can be used in conjunction with, faggots, AGA rock-rolls,
AGA Span and other ‘hard’ revetment techniques.

Coir Pallets
Coir Pallets offer an excellent natural solution
to establish marginal aquatic vegetation to lakes, ponds, rivers and stream
banks. Where lakes, ponds and reservoirs have been created by using artificial
methods of creating an impermeable basin with synthetic membranes and
liners coir pallets can often be the only way to establish aquatic plants
into the waterbody.
Specification of coir pallets.
 |
1m x 1m (1m2). 5kg. Per m2 dry weight. |
 |
1m x 1.5m (1.5m2). 7.5kg. per m2 dry weight. |
 |
Other sizes are available on request. |
| |
|
Pre-planted and established coir pallets.
Coir
pallets will have been planted at the nursery using 110cc ‘root
trainers’. The plants will be provided at a rate of 18 per
m2 and will be firmly rooted into the coir material.
Coir Pallets are available from stock in a variety of planting
variations, our ‘standard mixed’ Coir Pallet is extremely
popular and highly recommended. Coir pallets can also be grown to
order.
.
For applications in deeper or fast flowing water coir rolls can
be used in conjunction with faggots, AGA rock-rolls, AGA Span and
other ‘hard’ revetment techniques.

Faggots
Faggots are widely used in conjunction with many other
materials to facilitate bioengineered solutions to environmentally
sensitive projects. Once placed into situation faggots have a very
long life and thus become an integral part of many designs particularly
where coir rolls and pallets are specified.
Faggots can provide support for coir rolls and faggots to ensure
that they sit at the correct water level, they will also offer additional
erosion protection to the bank, particularly to the often vulnerable
‘toe’.
Faggots provide a very important useful technique to manage
scour below water level where coir rolls used on there own would
not address the problem Live faggots made from willow are used to
provide a living and very sustainable option, as well as providing
long-term erosion control they also improve biodiversity by increasing
habitat.
The A.G.A. Group also supply willow material in loose bundles
to be used for making and installing willow mattresses and spilling.
Specification of faggots.
 |
Material: Hazel, Chestnut, Willow (live) |
 |
300mm (12”) dia x 2m long. 6kg. per l/m dry
weight |
 |
400mm (16”) dia x 2m long. 12kg per l/m dry
weight. |
 |
Ties: Polypropylene multi-strand fibre twine. 3 ties
per bundle. |
Faggots can be supplied in lengths of up to 5 meters and
the material used to tie the faggot bundles can be a biodegradable
twine made from coir.
Production
All the hazel, chestnut and willow wood used by AGA is
harvested from plantations that are managed as a ‘renewable’
resource so there is no detrimental effect on the environment

AGA Rock Rolls
 |
AGA Rock Rolls can be an excellent option or component
of bank revetments, whilst developed by AGA primarily to be used
alongside coir rolls as they act as a sub-surface flexible bur permanent
gabion. In turbulent and fast flows AGA Rock Rolls are used to provide
a solid foundation on top of which pre-established coir rolls can
be installed. The roots of the aquatic plants can then quickly grow
and establish into the voids of the rock rolls giving long term
erosion control, bank support and habitat enhancement/.
Rock rolls can be used on their own to very good effect,
given the right condition, which will be specific to each individual
site it may be possible to vegetate the AGA Rock Roll with aquatic
plants.
|
Specification of AGA Rock Rolls
 |
300mm (12”) dia x 2m long. 120kg. dry
weight per l/m. |
 |
400mm (16”) dia x 2m long. 220kg. dry weight per l/m. |
 |
Netting: Synthetic High tenacity Polypropylene, mesh size
45-50mm nominal diamond. Knotless multi-strand yarn of 5mm dia. |

AGA Span
| AGA Span is a specialised product for vertical
bank protection. It provides a high-quality and very economical form
of erosion control. AGA Span is a prefabricated, revetment fabric,
which is UV stabilised. The technique can be softened by using edge
sods to provide a vegetated element to the face. After
installation and with time (a few months) the face of the ASG Span
will start to green up as it becomes colonised by natural algae
and lichens.
